Artist Bio

Gesiye is a multidisciplinary artist from Trinidad and Tobago with Nigerian heritage. She creates
tattoos, performance, film and documentary work to explore embodiment and storytelling as
forms of liberation. Her work in social and climate justice movements and her lived experience as
a queer Caribbean person inform her creative practice.

In 2015, she received a B.A. in Visual Arts from Columbia University, where she focused on contemporary relationships between race, power and play, interviewing NYPD officers and juxtaposing their stories with video game footage. Gesiye has shown work at a number of local and international spaces, including the National Museum of Trinidad and Tobago and FiveMyles Gallery. Her commissioned work, The Wound is a Portal, explores colonial legacies and their impact on the Black diaspora’s relationship with the land. It is currently showing at the National Museum of Wales until September 2023.
