I am 33 year old artist Chase ‘Colors’ Lawrence from Dominica. I’ve been creating art for as long as I can
remember since my fathers hobby was painting, as such I was exposed to expression through creation at
an early age. My previous job was graphic designer/layout artist but I found it too constrictive and so i
resigned to paint fulltime and operate my own Art Gallery (Island Art Gallery) in Dominica; to date I have
been painting fulltime for just over a decade.
In my work I strive to express my heritage and bring to life stories and folk tales from my nations history
to life through painting. My last exhibition called ‘Herstory’ a play on the word history was geared at
depicting the great part women played in the development and culture of my island.
I primarily work with oils and acrylics but I also branch out to carving and mixed media if the piece I am
working on leads me in that direction. Im called colors by my fellow artists because of the bold vibrant
colors I use in my paintings as well as the high contrast I apply in a lot of my works that make them pop
out at the viewer. This style I developed because my father used a lot of subtle tones in his paintings so
in growing up I would have more access to his bright colors and so it stuck with me to go to brighter
colors first.
