Bio: 6-time Finalist of the First Citizens National Poetry Slam, Alexandra Stewart is the
only 2-time Champion and the first in history to win the competition consecutively.
Additionally, she was the second place champ in both 2018 and 2021. Alexandra is a
talented writer who works relentlessly to improve her craft. In 2020, her mental health
poem was chosen as the winner out of 250 submissions to the International Why I Rise
competition. Most recently she was featured in the Toronto International Festival of
Authors (2021).
This experienced teaching artist has led sessions for students as young as 3 years old.
Alexandra has participated in 5 Youth Outreach Secondary School Tours performing for
over 60,000 secondary schools students across Trinidad and Tobago. Some of the
themes she has explored with youth include Cervical Cancer Awareness, Examination
Preparation, Gender-Based Violence and Climate Change.
Artist Statement: Storytelling emancipates. Through the use of spoken word poems
and stories I aim to enlighten, inspire and challenge listeners. Delving into social issues
or commenting on everyday joys, my goal is to fit this human experience into words.
With a focus on gender based violence and mental health I write to connect people.
