I chose film because of its unifying power. At 18 a scholarship sent me to New York where I earned a BA and MFA in film. I've since committed myself to developing my craft, taking every available opportunity (working as a camera op, sound tech, gaffer, producer, camera assistant, PA, editing assistant, editor) and have dedicated the bulk of my work to social projects. In 2018 I worked on the Oscar winning documentary Free Solo but felt compelled to leave this path to invest my experience and knowledge back into my home region, the Caribbean.
By 2017 I'd observed the growing popularity of film production in the Caribbean. I noticed a thrilling thing; the reclamation of voice which during colonialism was historically disallowed. Caribbean people were taking control of their own narratives and this excited me more than Academy Awards. In 2019 I founded the Hairouna Film Festival, a free non-profit film organization in my home island St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In three short years the festival has elevated the status of filmmaking in St. Vincent, empowered Vincentians through representation and education, and brought revenue into the film industry through the first script writing competition available to Vincentians.
